CONSIDER THIS

Scottish minister Robert Murray M’Cheyne said, “If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies. Yet distance makes no difference; He is praying for me.”

That’s exactly what we see in John 17. Many say it’s the greatest prayer ever prayed — it’s Jesus praying for His disciples — for you and for me. He’s not teaching. He’s not giving instructions. He’s praying. And we’re listening in. And what a prayer it is.

Jesus clearly expresses His heart, His desires, His hope. Look at some of the words He prays:

  • They belong to You
  • Keep them safe, protect them
  • Fill them with My joy
  • Make them ready for their mission in the world

Did you capture that? We belong to Him. We have a purpose: we are set apart to fulfill His mission — so the world will know Jesus. He doesn’t leave us defenseless but prays for our protection and security. The result? So we will be crammed full of His joy.

Jesus prayed for you then. And continues to pray for you right now, in the presence of God. He’s having a conversation about you. He has you on His heart.

How will this affect the way you pray?
