Who Are You?

Bible Passage: Colossians 1:1-2

CONSIDER THIS

Ever look in the mirror and wonder: Who are you?

Paul, sitting in prison, writes a letter to the church in Colosse. He’s heard false teaching is creeping in, encourages them to get back in alignment with God’s truth, and focuses them back on Jesus — Jesus is more than enough.

Right up front, in the first two verses of Colossians, Paul points out a couple of things.

First, we need to know who we are in Christ. When we follow Jesus, there is nothing humdrum about it. We are defined by God’s grace, not by worldly labels or our own shortcomings. He’s the One who changes our identity from sinner to saint. Indeed, we are loved, chosen, holy and righteous — certainly not by anything we do, but because of what He has done. As the worship song declares,

“I am chosen, not forsaken, I am who You say I am
You are for me, not against me, I am who You say I am.
Who the Son sets free, O is free indeed, I’m a child of God, yes I am.”

Secondly, we also need to know who HE is. God is our Father who has an never-ending heart of grace. When we are in need, we can run to Him, where we’ll find grace and peace. He is our Father who will not fail us, the Father we have always longed for.

You see, Paul’s words here are so much more than a formal greeting. They are a prayer for God’s empowering grace to sustain the Colossians — and points them to who they are in Christ and who HE is. So the next time we look in the mirror, we can embrace what we see: the reflection of Jesus.
