Unsung Heroes

Bible Passage: Acts 9:10-31

CONSIDER THIS

A hero might be living right next door and we don’t realize it. The pilot who flies us off to faraway places, the school teacher where we drop off our kids, the skilled craftsman who builds a fine piece of furniture. These people sound kind of ordinary. What do we expect — big names, splashy headlines, daring feats, a shiny red cape? We might be surprised to discover what is hiding in plain sight. Unsung heroes, everywhere we turn.

Take, for example, three fellows in the book of Acts: Stephen, Ananias and Barnabas. Each one simply obeyed what God called them to do, and as a result were part of Paul’s conversion. They were faithful servants who impacted church history. God’s heroes don’t care if you know about them; they want to make sure you know about HIM in God’s Kingdom. The heart of a hero is the heart of a servant, being obedient to serve the Lord when nobody knows.

The church is built and functions and grows because of the unsung heroes who make His name great. We may not be called to preach like Paul did, but we can pray for someone. We can share Jesus with someone. We can be His hands and feet and voice, on mission for Him. Tomorrow’s great evangelist might be delivering our newspaper. And the unsung hero who inspires him/her might be nearer than we could ever imagine — maybe staring at us in our mirror.
