CONSIDER THIS

Yigal Amir was born into a devout Jewish family in 1970. His father was a scribe, his ama was a kindergarten teacher. As a university student, Amir was radically opposed to the Oslo Accords and participated in protest rallies and marches. On November 4, 1996, Amir shot and killed Israel’s Prime Minister, Yitzhak Rabin. At his trial, Amir defended himself by stating: “According to the Jewish legal code, you can kill the enemy.”

Compare Saul of Tarsus to Yigal Amir. Saul was a Pharisee, sincerely following the law, wanting to do so perfectly, even adding to the law to practice. Saul was making a name for himself, making murderous threats, doing his best to destroy the Christian church. In his mind, Paul thought he was getting closer to God until he had an “Oops” moment on the way to Damascus. He is blinded by the light and hears a voice saying, “I am Jesus, the One you are persecuting.”

Everything changed. Including his name. Three days later, his sight restored, Paul immediately starts preaching, “Jesus is indeed the Son of God!”

So why is Paul now so furious at the Galatian churches? Paul goes postal because he treasures the truth and they were messing it up by following the wrong gospel. You see, Paul experienced this himself: he followed the Jewish religion, the wrong gospel, and ultimately persecuted Jesus Himself.

God wanted the Galatians — and you and me — to wake up! Recognize that even before you were born, God is the One who chose you. God is the One who knows you, designed you and called you by His outrageous grace. He is the One who reveals His Son to you so you can proclaim the true Gospel about Jesus. Experience His Truth, His freedom. It’s the most treasured gift we could ever receive!
