The Lord in the Storm

Book: Acts

Bible Passage: Acts 27:1-26

CONSIDER THIS

The waves are crashing, the sails are whipping wildly, and the anxious sailors are straining to see any sign of land. But there’s nothing to see. They are doing everything they can to survive but nothing is working. The truth slaps them in the face: they are lost and hopeless. That’s the way everyone on board feels, everyone except Paul. They’re in the midst of a stormy Mediterranean Sea, yet Paul is not shaken. He stands confidently and says, “Take heart! None of us will perish!”

We all face the storms of life. Troubles and suffering are sure to come our way. We, like Paul, can have confidence and hope smack in the middle of our storm. How can this be? Four reasons.

  1. GOD IS WITH US, EVEN IN THE STORM. The Lord never leaves us, He never abandons us, He stands with us —  and that is more than enough.
  2. WE BELONG TO GOD. What an absolutely mind-blowing statement, to be able to say: “I am His, I belong to Him. He loves me. He’s committed to me. He is mine!” The same hand that holds the oceans and storms, holds us!
  3. GOD IS IN COMPLETE CONTROL. No matter what is going on around us, we can know we are right where God wants us. It’s the safest place we can ever be.
  4. BELIEVE GOD. The danger is real, the waves are high, the darkness can’t get any darker but we can believe God, in spite of the circumstances. Even in the storm, God remains faithful. We can trust Him. God’s faithfulness never changes.

The storm is not a punishment. It’s simply part of the brokenness of this world. We can trust Him. God works out everything, even the most terrible things, for our good. And in the process, He makes us more like Jesus. He is worthy of our trust — for this life, in this storm and for eternity!
