An Appointment with Affliction

Speaker: Mickey Lohr

Bible Passage: 1 Thessalonians 3

CONSIDER THIS

As the story goes, a little boy slowly walks up the steps to get on the school bus. Literally, a few minutes later, there he is, slamming the front door, announcing, “I’ve quit school!” The mom questions why. In one breath he quickly replies, “School is too long, it’s too hard, it’s too boring, kids are mean, teachers are scary, I don’t like school, I’m home to stay.” Being a good mom, she gives him hugs and encouragement. From then on he has no trouble getting on the bus.

Life can be hard. Opposition and afflictions pop up unexpectedly, sometimes incessantly, so how do we stand strong in those difficult times — and not slam the door and quit?

The apostle Paul shows us how in his letter to the Thessalonians. In times of trouble we are not alone — certainly God is with us every step, but we also need each other. More than that, we have each other. We can encourage each other to stand.

Jesus Himself wants us to know in advance: Don’t be surprised — storms are ahead. We can expect troubles and tribulations so when it happens, our faith won’t be shaken. We can stand strong. Just hold on — and trust in Him!

So suffer well! Our faith is on display. Suffering has meaning, pain is never wasted, there is a purpose for our good. God is in control! Let that hold you during the hard times. And get back on the bus.
