Fighting for the Gospel
Fighting for the Gospel
Speaker: Brandon Lohr
Bible Passage: Galatians 2:1-16
CONSIDER THIS
We all fight for things we believe in — stuff like a better life for our kids, for a promotion at work, for “truth, justice and the American way”, for our dreams and goals in life, for our favorite team in the Super Bowl. We all fight for things that are important to us.
What was important to the apostle Paul? Fighting for the Gospel. We see it clearly in his letter to the churches in Galatia. When false teachers distort the Gospel, when they try to add more hoops to jump through to make salvation complete, even when a fellow apostle gets out of line — Paul stands up to them and speaks the Truth of the Gospel.
Paul makes it clear: “We are made right with God only through faith in Jesus Christ, never by rule-keeping.” Paul knew following a bunch of laws, doing a boatload of deeds and trying to be good wasn’t good enough. It’s always been about Jesus. After all, God sent Jesus to earth for a purpose. If the law alone could make us right with God, then why in the world did Jesus have to die?
So when people attacked the Gospel that had saved him, Paul passionately fights for it.
So should we. God calls us to share His gospel of grace to the world around us — and take a stand when it is distorted, defending it at all costs. Not because they are enemies. But because they need His grace as much as we do!
