Bible Passage: Exodus 12:1-14
CONSIDER THIS
A theme running through the Bible is “The Story of the Lamb.” It pops up everywhere, including the book of Exodus. Here God instructs the Israelites to slaughter a perfect lamb, eat “this first Passover feast” with your family and put its blood on your doorposts. All who have the blood of the lamb on the doorposts are saved from death and bondage!
Every detail of the Passover story points to Jesus.
Flash forward to John the Baptist, saying, “Behold the Lamb of God!” This is so much more than “O look, there He is! The Lamb of God!” It means, “Look…think…soak in and understand who Jesus is.” He didn’t just die, but sacrifices His life in our place, for our sins! His death isn’t a tragic accident in history. He dies on purpose for a purpose. He takes away our sins and pays our debt! This is God’s plan all along.
Here are just a few of the ways Jesus fulfills the Passover:
- Both the Passover lamb and the Lamb of God are spotless without blemish.
- The Passover lamb is killed on the same day and at the same time — as Jesus thousands of years apart
- The lamb’s blood is placed on the doorposts in the shape of a cross just like Jesus’ own blood runs down His cross
- ALL who trust in the blood of the Lamb are saved
Jesus forever changes Passover. During His last Passover feast, Jesus shocks His disciples. He points to Himself as the bread and wine. There’s no lamb on the table. Why? The Lamb is *at* the table.
Jesus is the ultimate Passover Lamb who sets us free eternally from sin and death.
The final chapter is seen in Revelation 5:6. “Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne!”
The Lamb is now on the throne!
