Series: The King is Coming
CONSIDER THIS
Obadiah is one of the shortest, most overlooked books in the Bible. It’s only 21 verses long, and honestly, at first glance, it feels like an angry ancient history lesson. It’s mostly God calling out a nation named Edom for being terrible neighbors to Israel.
You see, Edom is related to Israel. (Think grumpy cousins.) When disaster strikes Jerusalem, Edom not only stands by and watches — they cheer, gloat and help themselves to the plunder. They trust in their high mountain fortresses, thinking they are invincible. But God sees their pride and betrayal, declaring their justice is coming.
When we look closer, though, Jesus is all over this tiny book:
Jesus is our Defender. When Edom gloats over the hurting and fallen, Obadiah reminds us that God sees when people treat us unfairly and they will suffer the consequences. Jesus steps into our world, takes on our hurts, promises to make all wrong things right and saves us.
Jesus is our Deliverer. Obadiah says, “On Mount Zion there shall be deliverance.” That’s Jesus! He is our Deliverer. He is the Rescuer who climbs our mountain of pride and tears down our defenses, not to crush us, but to finally set us free.
Jesus is the King who brings us home. Even though Israel is scattered and defeated, Obadiah ends with a powerful declaration, “And the kingdom shall be the Lord’s.” Every empire, worry and fear will fade away, but Jesus’ kingdom lasts forever. Jesus is the King who rescues us from our own brokenness, beats the real enemies of sin and death, and invites us into a kingdom where love and justice win. He is our never-ending hope!
When we feel small, overlooked, or bruised by the unfairness of the world, Obadiah whispers: God sees it all — He is the ultimate Deliverer who wins the victory.
