The Lord is Our Righteousness

CONSIDER THIS

When life gets hard and messy, Jesus steps in as our only hope. He reconciles God and sinners, so that sinners might become His righteous people. We see this even back in the Old Testament book of Jeremiah. 

Jeremiah lived in Jerusalem through a brutal time, during its final decade before the Babylonian exile. God calls him as a prophet to warn people, but nobody listened. Not a single person repented. Jeremiah had to watch his whole city get destroyed. No wonder he is known as the “weeping prophet.” 

Right in the middle of all the darkness, Jeremiah shares a too-good-to-be-true promise: “The day is coming when God will make a new covenant with His people. Instead of carving laws onto stone tablets, God will write His law right on our hearts.”

Jesus starts this new covenant through His death and resurrection. The old system could tell us what to do, expose and condemn us, but it could not change our hearts or fix our weaknesses. This new covenant changes everything. God gives us His heart, lives in us and changes the way we live, forever. Now, everyone gets to know God personally, from the smallest to the greatest — all because God forgives our wickedness and forgets all of our sins.

Now we can walk in His grace. When God looks at our heart, He no longer sees our sin and failures. All He sees is the righteousness of His Son. The Lord indeed is our righteousness.
