The King’s Kindness

Bible Passage: 2 Samuel 9

CONSIDER THIS

Lo Debar. Ever hear of the place? Its name even sounds broken, forgotten and simply not good enough. Ever been there?  Welcome to the story of Mephibosheth.

Mephibosheth is the son of Jonathan — the grandson of King Saul. When Mephibosheth is five years old, his nurse hears his dad and gramps had died in battle. She tries to flee carrying this little boy, falls and drops him. As a result, he is crippled for life. Now he is helpless, hopeless and hides away in, you guessed it, Lo Debar. A place of desolation. No provision, no promise, no future.

But then, King David remembers a promise he made to Jonathan to show kindness to his family, and he pursues Mephibosheth.

Here is where we can see Jesus clearly in this Old Testament story.

We are Mephibosheth — totally crippled by sin from a fall, hiding away, separated from the King, sentenced to death. Instead of punishing us, Jesus is the greater King who actively pursues us to show grace, to give us His steadfast love and undeserved kindness.

David  invites Mephibosheth to eat at the King’s table forever, welcoming him with open arms to be a part of the royal family. Jesus does the same for us. He knows exactly how broken we are yet rescues us, makes us right with the King and invites us to sit at His table as His own children, forever. All because of His grace and loving kindness.

The King has invited you to sit at His table — forever— as His child. Come as you are.
