The Everlasting Kingdom

Bible Passage: 2 Samuel 7

CONSIDER THIS

Imagine building the most incredible sandcastle ever. We spend hours on it, crafting towers, digging moats, and finding the perfect shells. It’s glorious — for a while. But then, the tide comes in. No matter how strong we make it, the ocean wins, and the sandcastle vanishes.

Earthly kingdoms come and go. It’s a bit like David’s kingdom in the Old Testament. David is a “man after God’s own heart” and desires to build a permanent home for the Ark of the Covenant. But  David has it backwards. God makes an incredible promise to David — a promise that his throne and kingdom will last forever. But what happens? David grows old and dies, and his kingdom is eventually destroyed.

God’s promises never fall apart, even when our sandcastles do.

The promise of an everlasting kingdom is never meant to be about a building or a physical country. It’s pointing to David’s descendant: Jesus. David’s temporary kingdom is a shadow of Jesus’ perfect, eternal reign.

Where the warrior David fights his battles with swords, Jesus wins the ultimate victory on the cross. While David was a sinner who needs a Savior, Jesus is the sinless King who saves. David’s sandcastle is washed away by time, but “the Kingdom of our Lord — He will reign forever and ever!”

As believers, we are citizens of an unshakable kingdom. We can trust in a King whose reign never ends.
