Jesus Our Wounded Lover

Book: Ezekiel

Bible Passage: Ezekiel 16

CONSIDER THIS

Ezekiel looks like a shocking, messy story about an abandoned baby, dumped in the dirt, left to die. God comes by, sees her lying there, helpless and alone, and says “Live!”

He brings her in, cares for her, watches her become a beautiful jewel. She grows up, but is still vulnerable, fragile and exposed so He covers her and enters a covenant with her so she becomes His. He clothes her in fine silks and precious jewels and gives her extravagant gifts. Her beauty is perfection because of His splendor. But she turns away and uses His gifts for obscene practices and to chase other lovers.

Still, He says, “Yet I will remember the everlasting covenant I made with you. I will forgive you of all that you have done. You will know that I am the LORD.”

Jesus is hidden right here in the Old Testament.

This is us before Jesus. Helpless, dirty and lost in sin. Jesus chases after us, pursues us, longs to be close with us. He washes off our filth, cleanses us and claims us as His beloved bride. And yet, we take His gifts of love and grace, and toss them all away on “other lovers.” Jesus doesn’t walk away. Instead He comes into our chaos and speaks life and freedom into our lives and keeps His everlasting promise. All so we can know He is our Lord, our Wounded Lover — and we belong to Him.
