Book: Nahum

Bible Passage: Nahum 1:1-8

CONSIDER THIS

The book of Nahum reads like a gritty disaster movie, a brutal superpower that seems invincible behind its massive stone walls — a city of blood, lies, and plunder. Enter Nahum, a voice from a quiet, obscure place with no army or political clout. His words are packed with intensity about God’s wrath and the coming destruction of Nineveh.

Looking for a warm, fuzzy feeling? Nahum might not be your cup of tea. But when we look closer, we will find this prophet points us directly to Jesus.

The irony starts with his name. Nahum means comfort or consolation. How does a book packed with terrifying judgment bring comfort? It reminds us that God doesn’t ignore evil — His wrath is a steady, just response of a righteous God toward evil.

Nahum puts God’s goodness and wrath side by side. Right after describing an unstoppable storm of wrath and justice, Nahum pauses to say: “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; He knows those who take refuge in Him.”

Jesus is that ultimate stronghold. The reality is we all sin, we deserve judgment, but Jesus steps in and takes our punishment on the cross. By absorbing God’s wrath,  He becomes our shelter. When we trust in Him, we aren’t hiding from God; we are hiding in God.

When life feels heavy or unfair, and we wonder if God sees, remember: Jesus is both the perfectly just Judge who will defeat all evil, and the gentle Savior who knows our names and keeps us safe in the midst of trouble.
